 تاجمحل (به هندی: तIज महल، به اردو: تاج محال) آرامگاه زیبا و باشکوهی است که در نزدیکی شهر اگرا و در ۲۰۰ کیلومتری جنوب دهلی نو پایتخت هند واقع شدهاست. این بنا به دستور شاه جهان، امپراتور گورکانی هند به منظور یادبود از همسر ایرانی محبوبش ممتاز محل که در سال ۱۶۳۱ (میلادی) بههنگام وضع حمل فوت کرد بنا شدهاست. شاه تصمیم گرفت پس از مرگ همسرش با ساخت بنایی زیبا، مجلل و عظیم، همسرش را جاودانه کند. از اینرو آرامگاهی زیبا بر روی قبر او بنا نهاد.
همانطور که مشخص است، نام این بنای زیبا ایرانی میباشد. این ساختمان بر پایه مخلوطی از معماری ایرانی، هندی و اسلامی تأسیس شدهاست و در ساخت آن ۲۰،۰۰۰ هنرمند و معمار از نقاط مختلف آسیا بهخصوص ایران، شبه قاره هند، آسیای میانه و آناتولی شرکت داشتهاند.
آغاز ساخت تاجمحل سال ۱۶۳۲م (۱۰۴۲ ش) بود و در سال ۱۶۴۷م (۱۰۵۷ ش) تکمیل شد. احمد معماری لاهوری و برادرش استاد حمید لاهوری(سده یازدهم هجری) سرمعماران ایرانی سازنده تاج محل در هندوستان بودهاند. در برخی متون نیز از عیسی خان شیرازی و امانت خان شیرازی طغرانویس، که هر دو ایرانی بودهاند نام برده شدهاست، که گویا خطاطیهای روی در و دیوارهای تاج محل به امانت خان واگذار شدهبودهاست.

At that time he was 14 years old and she, a Muslim Persian princess, was 15. After meeting her, Shah Jahan went back to his father and declared that he wanted to marry her. Though Shah Jahan had other wives also, but, Mumtaz Mahal was his favorite and accompanied him everywhere, even on military campaigns. In the year 1631, when Mumtaz Mahal was giving birth to their 14th child, she died due to some complications. It is said that Shah Mahal was so heartbroken after her death that he ordered the court into morning for two years. Some time after her death, Shah Jahan undertook the task of erecting the world's most beautiful monument in the memory of his beloved. It took 22 years and the labor of 22,000 workers to construct the monument, which is also said to be the last wish of Mumtaz Mahal.
